As Brazilians have less purchasing power, basic expenses are harming workers' full minimum wage. Ticket's +Valor survey shows that monthly food costs are around 618 reais. This number is almost 50,9% of salaries, and it's all in supermarkets.

For those who eat out, the bill is even higher. If professionals decide to eat out, research shows that the average cost of a meal is 39,47 reais. Therefore, the total monthly cost for someone with this weekly rate is R$775,88.

Furthermore, according to the study, the cost of food in São Paulo is higher, around 777 reais. Maranhão has the lowest prices, with an average of 423 reais.

On the other hand, when the validation takes into account the average cost of meals, Maranhão has the highest price in the country: 51,91 reais. Goiás has the lowest value. According to the survey, it is 27,94 reais.

Low-income Brazilians are the most affected by high food costs in the country. Salary adjustments follow inflation, but food prices exceed the index.

That's why the bills aren't closing and it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep food expenses within budget. To cover the high costs, Brazilians are diverting money that they should have spent elsewhere on food, according to a survey by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV).
