Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will drive for Aston Martin from 1, the team announced on Monday, after the 2023-year-old Spaniard signed a multi-year contract with the team.

Alonso arrives from Renault-owned Alps to replace four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, 35, who announced his retirement at the end of the season last week.
The vacancy in the Alps created by the Spaniard's departure is expected to be filled by the team's 21-year-old Australian reserve, last year's Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri.

“I still have the ambition to fight on the front line and I want to be part of an organization committed to learning, development and success,” Alonso said in a statement from Aston Martin. “The passion I observed. The desire to achieve this convinced me to maintain my pleasure and commitment to the sport. I intend to win again in this sport, so I have to take advantage of the right opportunities.”

Lance, the son of Canadian billionaire owner Lance Stroll who also drives for Aston Martin, has invested heavily in the team and is building a new factory as well as recruiting employees from rival teams.

“I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it is clear that he is a determined winner like me,” said Stroll. “I set out to bring together the best talent and develop the right resources to succeed in this competitive sport, and these plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.”
